Business Rates – The Hard Sell

I took a call from a client today who says that as he was being infested with swarms of flies he thought it must be time to take some advice on his Business Rates. The swarms of flies referred to are the endless hard sell phone calls coming through from so called rating consultants.

My client was right, the ritual exaggerated claims and sales techniques of the cold callers declare that a Rating Revaluation is upon us. Rate Payers will be receiving advanced notice of their new Rateable Values in the course of the next few weeks. Some may have signed on line to receive these electronically. There will be an opportunity to question these RV’s prior to them coming into force on the 1st April 2017 on factual or other grounds. After the 1st April 2017, the Rateable Values can be challenged through the appeals process.

One of the simplest ways of swatting unwanted cold callers is to say that you already have a Rating Advisor in place. This would normally be a Chartered Surveyor who specialises in rating matters.
