New Life for The Manna House

After 32 years of service as a Christian bookshop counselling service and for a time a coffee shop, the well-known Manna House on the corner of St Giles Street and Hazelwood Road has been sold to facilitate the concentration of the counselling service at number 85 St Giles Street and the decision of the bookshop to move to new premises. Stephen Battersby of Underwoods who dealt with the sale comments “This is a somewhat unusual property with distinctive features. From the outset, we felt that it would be most suited for use as a restaurant and having obtained planning permission for the change of use, we are delighted to have achieved a sale on behalf of the Trustees.

Underwoods have seen a resurgence of interest in retail property over the past three months. Two shops on St Giles Street which have been on the market for some time have now been let and a letting of number 20 Castilian Street was achieved within seven days of the property coming onto the market. We have strong interest on the former White & Bishop premises and are anticipating strong interest on number 20 Market Square which is just coming onto the market.

The strength of the retail market is perhaps best illustrated by a sale of a development site on Wellingborough Road (numbers 219-225) which has been sold to a developer for the construction of shop units on the ground floor with residential above. With strong interest on 205 and 345 Wellingborough Road, we do not feel it is an overstatement to say that the local retail market in Northampton has strengthened considerably”.
